We believe it’s crucial to advance diverse perspectives on problem gambling. Here, you’ll find events hosted by leaders, researchers, clinicians and advocates from a wide range of communities and backgrounds. Many of our trainings also offer gambling-specific CEs!

Following completion of Sessions 1 and 2 thirty-hour training and education program, counselors will be ready to assess, screen, and evaluate for gambling problems among their caseloads and among those who present for care. They will be ready to intervene in a crisis, assist in preparation of restitution plans, refer clients for appropriate levels of care, and begin the treatment planning process, etc. Following completion of the “From Gambling to Gambling Disorder – A Clinical Perspective”, counselors will be prepared to work with family, significant others, and special populations. They will be able to present salient patient education topics to clients and families, prepare court reports, assist with complete asset protection plans, and use an array of clinical strategies focusing on impulse control and self-regulation interventions in the treatment of gambling disorders, etc.
The training for clinical professionals is a total of 60 hours of gambling-specific training and education sessions. Participants who successfully complete the entire 60 hours are then encouraged to begin the International Certification process.
Session 1 OBJECTIVES: -Ability to identify, discuss and incorporate current definitions of gambling, problem gambling, gambling disorder and related terminology into clinical process activities. -Discuss and incorporate data and concepts of the historical and current prevalence and impacts of gambling, problem gambling and gambling disorder into clinical activities. -Identify, explain, discuss and integrate state and federal definitions and regulations of gambling including ongoing changes and modifications that impact gambling that is legal vs illegal including Wisconsin specific details. -Develop knowledge and ability to use problem gambling and gambling disorder screening, assessment, diagnosis and treatment clinical tools, skills and techniques to work with individuals/family members/others whose lives are negatively impacted by gambling/problem gambling/gambling disorder. *Session 1 is a prerequisite for Session 2.

How are domestic violence and gambling related? The connection between gambling and non-physical abuse such as financial abuse.
Economic abuse- what it is, how current practices enable it, and raising awareness of it.
How do we improve awareness of the issue, develop screening tools and building skills?
OBJECTIVES: 1) Understanding THE connection between gambling and domestic violence. 2) Being able to state an understanding of implementing screening tool. 3) Understanding non-physical forms of abuse such as financial and social abuse.
Presenter Bio: Patricia Jirovetz is a Licensed Art Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor and Internationally Certified Gambling Counselor. Patricia currently works private practice at Creative Calm Counseling LLC in Oshkosh and In-Patient Behavioral Health at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. Patricia has been involved with the WI Council on Problem Gambling for over 10 years as a helpline responder, Board member, and President of the Board of Directors. She has facilitated various gambling workshops as well as co-facilitated Phases I-IV. Eduction is important so Patricia has worked with Drug Free Communities of Fond duLac County to co-sponsor the Start the Conversation 5K Run/walk as well as promoting the National Problem Gambling Screening Day in March.

Attendees will continue to explore the ever-changing field of gambling-related harm, highlighting emerging trends and best practices. Participants will explore emotional intelligence, universal behaviors and the impact they have on the workplace/recovery. Presentations will focus on the continuum of care including prevention, treatment, and recovery for gambling related harm & Gambling Disorder. We will explore considerations for designing programs to continue to reduce barriers, create connections and encourage change.
Attendees will learn innovative clinical interventions and prevention strategies to apply when working with at risk or vulnerable populations including youth/young adults, women, individuals in the criminal justice system, LGBTQ+, veterans and those in the military.
We will hear stories of hope, strength and recovery from those with lived experience from gambling related harm as well as develop an understanding of how self-help groups work to bring people together through meetings such as Gambler’s Anonymous and Gam-Anon.
Registration to the conference also includes: breakfast, lunch and afternoon refreshments.

Session 2 OBJECTIVES: -Identify, discuss and differentiate the impacts and effects of gambling on the majority of the world and on the small percentage of individuals who experience brain function related changes that may result in gambling disorder. -Explain and discuss gambling disorder in terms of risk factors, characteristics, defenses and cognitive distortions and incorporation of these realities into a clinical process. -Identify, explain, compare and contrast gambling disorder treatment issues, techniques, phenomenon and utilization in clinical practice settings. -Identify, explain, discuss and provide multiple self-help and recovery related support groups and other resources to compare and contrast different resources that can provide ongoing support for clients in support of change and recovery processes for problem gambling and gambling disorder. *Must provide proof of Session 1 completion.

The annual Minnesota Conference on Problem Gambling.
We have a wonderful lineup of presenters who will cover a wide-range of issues pertaining to problem gambling. This year we’re trying a free hybrid model. As much as we wish we all could meet in person, this allows us to increase our outreach without any barriers.
All sessions are being recorded. Anyone registered will have access to the recordings until December 16, 2022. CEUs will be provided for each of the sessions you attend personally or virtually.

Session 3 OBJECTIVES:
-Identify, discuss and explain multiple categories of humanness issues and factors that can have impacts on and be components of working with gambling, problem gambling and gambling disorder.
-Identify, discuss, explain and compare/contrast the involvement of humanness issues and factors on individuals involved with gambling, problem gambling and gambling disorder.
-Explain, discuss and offer examples of the changes in and impacts of the internet on gamblers and the world of gambling.
-Compare and contrast different definitions of gambling in various US States, other countries, multiple individuals/websites/organizations and then support attendees to decide on how they will define the term gambling for themselves and for integration into their clinical work with gambling/problem gambling/ gambling disorder. *Must provide proof of Session 1 and 2 completion.
