Prediction markets have rapidly evolved from relatively specialized forecasting tools into widely accessible commercial platforms that allow users to trade on an expanding range of outcomes. Although these platforms are often presented as financial or information-aggregation products, many incorporate features associated with online gambling, including continuous access, rapid feedback, repeated wagering opportunities, gamified interfaces, and incentives designed to sustain engagement.

This webinar, led by Dr. Nizan Geslevich Packin, builds on the recent Science Policy Forum, “Prediction Markets as a Public Health Threat,” examining why the rapid growth and mainstreaming of commercial prediction markets warrant attention from the gambling and public-health communities. Participants will learn about the gap between the expansion of prediction markets and the limited empirical research examining their potential public-health consequences, while identifying “unknowns” and questions that should be prioritized as gambling and public-health stakeholders respond to their continued expansion.

Commercial tobacco use and gambling-related harm are often treated as separate individual behaviors, but both can be described by history, federal policy, commercial influences, and the disruption of traditional practices.

This presentation shares findings from community-based participatory research study conducted with American Indian communities, including survey data and insights from Elders. Presenters will explore the relationship between gambling, commercial tobacco use, and casino environments; distinguish traditional practices from commercialized products; and discuss how culture, community, and reconnection can inform culturally grounded approaches to prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Every November and December, participants of the Gift Responsibly Campaign work to raise awareness about the risks of youth gambling, educate communities about the dangers of gifting lottery tickets to children, and promote responsible gambling practices for those of legal age who choose to gamble.

This informational session will give an overview of the updated 2026 campaign toolkit, review campaign participation levels, and offer suggestions for how to tailor the Gift Responsibly Campaign messaging to your audience or community.

Identifying characteristics of at-risk youth gamblers is essential for both prevention and early intervention. While several prevention programs show promise to reduce risk, for youth already experiencing gambling problems, alternative approaches to early intervention may be warranted. Using data from the Minnesota Student Survey, which assesses gambling and mental health concerns among 8th, 9th, and 11th graders, Dr. Serena King will provide recommendations for screening and early intervention with problem gambling. This webinar will provide a novel and nuanced approach to supplement, support, and improve prevention and early intervention programs for treatment providers.
