Understanding Gambling-Related Harm and Commercial Tobacco Use in Native Communities

Commercial tobacco use and gambling-related harm are often treated as separate individual behaviors, but both can be described by history, federal policy, commercial influences, and the disruption of traditional practices.

This presentation shares findings from community-based participatory research study conducted with American Indian communities, including survey data and insights from Elders. Presenters will explore the relationship between gambling, commercial tobacco use, and casino environments; distinguish traditional practices from commercialized products; and discuss how culture, community, and reconnection can inform culturally grounded approaches to prevention, treatment, and recovery.
