What exactly is problem gambling? Problem gambling is gambling behavior that has a detrimental effect on a person or their family, often impacting their daily life and career.

This behavior is also called gambling disorder or gambling addiction, and anyone who gambles can be at risk for developing it. It’s not a financial problem or a willpower issue. Gambling addiction is a recognized mental health diagnosis.

Signs and symptoms of problem gambling include thinking about gambling constantly, feeling the need to bet more money more often, trying to win money back, often known as chasing losses, feeling restless or irritable when trying to stop, or a loss of control.

Once gambling interferes with a person’s mental or physical health, job, relationships, or other areas of life, it’s a problem.
