It’s Not About Money Until It Is: Challenges in Treatment

Valerie Tebbetts, ICGC-II; Shirley Hoak, JD, ICGC-II

The entanglement of finances with Disordered Gambling presents a unique challenge to treatment providers who may only have their personal experience with money and debt to rely on.  Clients can be reluctant to disclose their real financial circumstances.  Is it their discomfort or yours creating a barrier? How do you respond when someone discloses staggering amounts of debt?  Upon learning their real financial situation, your response is critical to their continued treatment and recovery. This workshop will address some common barriers in dealing with client finances and will share data from a survey of treatment providers conducted in CT.
