    Significant step forward in educating the public but narrow focus on drugs and alcohol ignores gambling addiction 

    Washington, DC – The National Council on Problem Gambling applauds U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy for releasing his ground-breaking report on Facing Addiction in America but regrets the missed opportunity to address gambling addiction.  Gambling addiction is a significant disorder in its own right and often co-occurs with substance abuse, complicating the outcome for both problems. According to Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director, “It is likely that the prevention of gambling addiction will reduce costs and consequences of other disorders, as at a minimum, the rate of problem gambling among people with substance use disorders is four to five times that found in the general population.”  Read full release surgeon-general-landmark-report-addiction-nov-2016
