We believe that some features of loot boxes are similar to those of slot machines and raise the same responsible gambling/consumer protection issues, especially regarding young players. We recently wrote a letter to the FTC requesting to be part of their August 7, 2019 public workshop on loot boxes and just issued the attached statement on loot boxes.
Overall, NCPG and the problem gambling field can play a useful role in helping to reduce possible gambling-related problems with loot boxes by drawing on our experience in responsible gambling, especially as gaming and gambling continue to converge.
