While most video gaming is harmless and fun, there are growing concerns in higher education about the risks of gaming disorder and the intersection of mental health issues and other disorders. Issues such as declining academic performance, risked financial aid eligibility, poorer physical health, dropout, and intersections with mental health and other disorders have become more of a priority for colleges and communities alike to address. disorder With Gaming Disorder recently acknowledged by the World Health Organization in the upcoming International Classification of Diseases. In this training, we’ll uncover key trends and data around gaming and other health intersections in young adults, discuss contributing risk and protective factors, and have an interactive discussion on methods of supports, including those specifically available at SCSU. From student to administrator to community member, we can all play a role in contributing to safer gaming in collegiate wellness.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
– Discuss least three trends in data on the relationships between video gaming, mental health and gambling
– State at least five risk factors for gaming disorder
– Identify at least three tools to use in professional and/or personal settings
