To outsiders (e.g., family, friends), the gambling behavior that coincides with a diagnosis of gambling disorder is difficult to comprehend. How can losing thousands of dollars be fun? Why would someone do such a thing? This webinar will explore the functionality of gambling behavior in the context of individuals diagnosed with gambling disorder. It will discuss motivations for gambling, needs that gambling meets, whether gambling is a volitional act, and subtypes of individuals with a gambling problem. The webinar will conclude with a brief review of how to assess the functionality of gambling through a functional analysis.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe at least two motivations for gambling in individuals diagnosed with gambling disorder.
2. Identify the three subtypes associated with gambling disorder.
3. Summarize the three aspects of a functional analysis.
The 33rd National Conference on Gambling Addiction & Responsible Gambling will feature thought leaders from the areas of prevention, education, treatment, enforcement, research, responsible gaming, regulation and recovery.
