NCGC Criteria

Certification Criteria & Instructions

 

In 1984, the national gambling counselor certification program recognized the need to promote a competency based certification program for professionals treating problem and pathological gamblers and their families. The IGCCB currently contracts with the National Council on Problem Gambling to administer this program.

Below are the individual requirements located in the Certification Criteria and Instructions packet.

To be submitted by APPLICANT

  • Application Form A.1
  • Applicant Code of Ethical Conduct, A.2
  • Applicant Directory Authorization A.3
  • Copy of passing NCGC examination score report
  • Nonrefundable $185 certification fee
  • Documentation of a Bachelors Degree or equivalent  in the behavioral health field, such as a license or certification in a recognized behavioral health field (i.e. psychology, addictions, clinical social work, etc.)
  • Documentation of 30 hours (NCGC-I) or 60 hours (NCGC-II) of gambling specific training

*Applicants are required to obtain clinical experience treating gamblers and/or family members (100 hours for NCGC-I; 2,000 hours for NCGC-II) in an approved setting with a minimum number of sessions with a Board Approved Clinical Consultant (BACC).Minimum guidelines for approved supervision/consultation should include at least 4 one hour sessions (NCGC-I) or 2 one hour sessions for a period of two years totaling 24 hours (NCGC-II). BACC consultation may be done in person, by phone, by email, or as arranged between BACC and applicant. Applicant may present properly documented past clinical work with gamblers and their family members for consideration by the BACC, and if accepted these hours may be credited toward the 100/ 2,000 experiential hours required for NCGC-I/NCGC-II. These should include a minimum current reviewed caseload as agreed to with the BACC.

 

Note: All applicants who apply for certification after April 3, 2007 must possess a Bachelors Degree or equivalent to meet the behavioral education requirement for certification. This ends and replaces the previous requirement of 300 hours of education from a behavioral health field.
