State lottery gifts not for kids

The Illinois Lottery is joining a national gambling control agency to caution against giving state lottery tickets as Christmas gifts to teenagers.

The practice could encourage gambling among teens, which has become an increasing concern in light of recent independent studies, according to a statement released by the Illinois Lottery and the National Council on Problem Gambling.

“There is strong evidence suggesting that 70-80 percent of adolescents have gambled for money in the past year, approximately 30 percent report gambling on a weekly basis and current problem gamblers report beginning gambling during childhood, ages 9-10,” the statement read.

The Lottery urges gift givers to “please make sure you keep the (recipient’s) age in mind.
