The service was launched this month and will compliment the organization's phone and online support, allowing those affected by problem gambling a more private means of accessing help.

Gambling Helpline CEO Krista Ferguson says while the uptake on the service has been a little slow, with problem gambling affecting around a quarter of a million addicts and family members, there is undoubtedly a need for such support in New Zealand.

She says every person who texts the service will receive a personalized message from a counselor and advice on seeking further help.
